If, after you have come up with a sentence for the relationship of the provided words, and still 3 or 4 of the possible answer word pairs or phrases fit your relationship, then you'll need to revise your relationship. And how should you do that? Change your relationship and make it more specific. For example, assume you are given the following analogy:
| ROSE: FLOWER |
| |
snake : reptile |
| |
peacock : bird |
| |
whale : mammal |
| |
Mercury : planet |
| |
student : person |
to which you may first reply that a rose is a type of flower, which is true. But, looking at the choices, notice that a snake is a type of reptile, a whale is a type of mammal, a peacock is a bird, etc, and so your relationship is not precise enough. So you should change the relationship. Instead, a rose is a colorful and considered a beautiful flower, in which case the answer is then peacock and bird, because the peacock is a colorful and often-considered beautiful bird.

If you find that your relationship does not eliminate enough choices, then make your relationship more precise. Remember that the makers of the GRE claim that all relationships are precise and exact, so the more precise and exact your relationship, the better. |
